Watershed Science

The Hydrology Program of the Department of Land, Air and Water Resources offers the minor in Watershed Science. This minor is intended for environmental, natural or social science students who have an interest in the interfaces between hydrology, ecology, policy and management. Coursework in the minor provides fundamental skills and knowledge on science and management of watersheds in the context of current water resources and ecological problems.

Prerequisites:

  • MAT 016B Short Calculus (3 units)
  • CHE 002A General Chemistry (5 units)
    • CHE 002B General Chemistry (5 units) Recommended
  • PHY 007A General Physics (4 units)
  • BIS 002A Introduction to Biology: Essentials of Life on Earth (5 units) 

23-26 units

Complete four required courses (16-18 units)

  • HYD 141 Physical Hydrology (4 units)
    • Or ESM 100 Principles of Hydrologic Science (4 units)
  • SSC 100 Principles of Soil Science (5 units) 
    • Or SSC 118 Soils in Land Use and the Environment (4 units)
  • HYD 144 Groundwater Hydrology (4 units)
    • Or SSC 107 Soil Physics (5 units) 
  • HYD 124 Plant-Water-Soil Relationships (4 units)
    • Or HYD 151 Field Methods in Hydrology (4 units)

Choose one course (4 units) 

  • HYD 143 Ecohydrology (4 units)
  • ESM 144 Trees and Forests (4 units)
  • ESP 151 Limnology (4 units)
